Malady Head Hiking Trail

Malady Head is a beautiful natural rock formation located in Terra Nova National Park on the Eastport Peninsula. It is easily visible when driving east through the park or when driving away from Eastport on the causeway.

Malady Head is also the name of the campground associated with the landmark. From the parking lot in the campground, the Malady Head trail is 4.21 km roundtrip. The lookout is approximately 2.1 km in and what a lookout it is! It affords a spectacular view of the Eastport Peninsula right down to Salvage. You can see the Eastport causeway, Wings Pond, the Bonavista Peninsula, parts of Sandringham and even the lookout on Sandy Cove Hill.

If you don’t have a National Park pass, you can get one from the machines at either entrance to the park, drop into the Visitors’ Centre or buy one at the Malady Head kiosk. The first kilometre of trail is lovely and well-maintained.

The second kilometre gets wetter and tougher and looks less maintained. At points, it’s like walking through a very narrow chute and there’s a good chance you will get scratched by goudie if you are wearing shorts. The last third of the second kilometre is almost entirely uphill as you climb stairs to get to the lookout, but it’s worth the trip!
