Louil Hill hiking trail is located within the Terra Nova National Park boundary, just after the turnoff to the Eastport Peninsula from the Trans Canada Highway. It is an approximately 3.75 km loop from the parking lot, with an option to climb what feels like a thousand stairs (but is probably more like one hundred) to get to a viewpoint overlooking Alexander Bay, including Cull’s Harbour, Traytown and Glovertown.
The trail is a relatively easy one (minus the staircase) and meanders through a forest of black spruce, balsam fir and birch interspersed with moss in some parts, while in others, it’s open, with fields of goowiddy (otherwise known as sheep laurel). With its bright pink flowers, the goowiddy sure makes a pretty picture when it’s out in bloom.
